The Aleño Dance Collective is back, in a new space, with a new evening-length dance performance for Fresno audiences. Debuting this Friday night in the intimate Hart’s Haven Used Bookstore, audiences can look forward to a night of, what founding member of Aleño, Alexandra Tiscareno, describes as, “a 90-minute exploration [that] delves into the deep complexity of human experience within grieving.” The evening will feature choreography from directors Mikayla Kapri and Tiscareno, as well as company dancer Gael Martinez. The dancing company includes: Fatima Rosas Flores, Jacob Gasca, Haley Gilpin, Gael Martinez, Lauren McQuay, Ailyn Monsisvais, Jason Pak, Siena Simas, Olyvia Stafford, Lei Lani Stovall, and Faith Vang.
Aleño has made their mark in the Central Valley dance arena as a troupe that ensures their productions are inclusive of a diverse group of emotionally driven, technique oriented, and storytelling focused dancers. Personally, the powerful pieces I have seen over the past few years have shown me just how artistically freeing it can be to let the body and music drive the dance, in a focused piece, that is full of heart. As part of Aleño Dance Collective’s mission, Tiscareno iterates, “Through rigorous choreography and collaborative projects, Aleño Dance Project invites audiences and dancers to experience the transformative power of movement free from the standards in which dance operates.” It’s rare for a dance company to be so audience-minded when staging their movement, but it’s that very focus which allows this company of dancers to truly connect beyond technique and formation. Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of communication, and when you see an Aleño Dance Collective show, you are witness to true storytelling, through dance, in its purest form.
The Good, The Bad, and the Ok…I guess will play September 27th and 28th at Hart’s Haven Used Bookstore, located at 950 N. Van Ness Ave in Fresno’s Tower District. Tickets can be purchased at the link below. Do yourself a favor and make sure you see this show!
